Melaka is situated on the west coast of the Malaysia peninsular, 148 km south of the nation’s capital, Kuala Lumpur. Melaka was founded circa 1400 by Parameswara, a Srivijayan descendant. Melaka came to being an empire during the Sultanate reign and became a central power in Southeast Asia. Then, came the Portuguese and conquered Melaka in 1511. The Dutch in 1641. And the British in 1824.

As can be seen in this artwork, the Melaka house has integrated elements of Chinese architecture such as the stairs, located in front of the house. The stairs are made from bricks and mortar, while, the remaining structure are constructed from wood. The attap or roof are made from leaves of Nipah palms.

The artist has managed to capture the essence of village living that may not be visible anymore in this modern age.

The early formation of the state of Negeri Sembilan (which literally means The Nine States) was based on a confederation of nine territories, which were governed by its own chieftains. Refer map here. Now, Negeri Sembilan is divided into six administrative areas and ruled as a constitutional state by the Yamtuan of Negeri Sembilan, a descendant of Minangkabau.

There has been a sizeable Minangkabau settlement in Negeri Sembilan since the seventeenth century. The Minangkabaun originated from the island of West Sumatra, Indonesia. The house shown here is called the Rumah Gadang (which means “big house”), the roofline curve upward from the middle and end in points, in imitation of the water buffalo’s upward-curving horns. It reflects the culture and values of the Minangkabau.

In this art, set in the background is the paddy field and the main subject, the house is showing only one side, while, the actual houses are mostly symmetrical in construction.
